What’s Wrong With This Picture?

It’s a little fuzzy and if he raised his chin a little while he was breaking into Subway a few days ago, we’d get better identification.  But no worries- that’s a great shot of him stealing the coat once inside.

Yeah, we got him.  Do you think it helped that genius was wearing gloves?

City Council Cuts Red Tape

The Idaho Falls City Council unanimously voted to streamline the pawn ordinance by eliminating the requirement to keep records on CDs, DVDs, and used clothing.

Keeping pawn records solves crime, but it also creates a burden for the owners of pawnshops. Since pawn records on CDs and used clothing rarely help in solving cases and since keeping detailed records on these items can be tedious for the businesses, I asked the city council to eliminate that requirement.  Since the council is always on the alert to make government more efficient and more business friendly, the council enthusiastically endorsed it.

Don't Be Fooled By Scams

By Joelyn Hansen

I’ll admit there’s something to admire about a scammer. I disagree with what they do 100 percent, but they do possess a little creativity and ingenuity thinking up scams to bilk good citizens out of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars. If only they could use those skills for good.

If you look at the list of scams created over the years, it’s no wonder why people fall victim to these demon schemers. They play on emotion, greed, ignorance and sometimes kindness to get to their end goal.

Just the other day a resident called into dispatch to report a scammer that tried soliciting her. The caller tried to pass themselves off as a young relative (they’ve usually done their homework and have an actual family name) that is out of the country and in trouble. He asked her to send money to get back home. Luckily, she was smart enough to ask the kid what his mother’s maiden name was before she would send him any money – course, the caller hung up.

She’s not the first to have this happen to and she definitely won’t be the last!

Even I was targeted by a scammer while inquiring about a rental property on Craigslist. I received an email from someone acting as the property owner. They never asked for any money, but the email was filled with red flags indicating they eventually would. It turned out the person in the email was a phony.

Unfortunately, catching and arresting scammers is difficult. Often they live in other countries where U.S. law is not upheld. Education is really our most valuable tool in preventing residents falling victim to scams.

Check out these websites at fbi.gov and ftc.gov for information about different scams.

Troy Harris Joins IFPD

[Me, Troy, Mayor Fuhriman]

Don’t be fooled by his Vin Diesel rugged good looks.  Though certainly capable of being the tough guy, the newest Idaho Falls Police Officer, Troy Harris, is a softy on the inside.
Troy joins the Idaho Falls Police with a great reputation for being able to diffuse any type of situation.  He has most recently served as a police officer for Blackfoot PD.
Chief Dave Moore hates to see him leave and told me that Troy brings a maturity to the job not commonly found with new officers.  He especially loves the way Troy treats the public, which is a big plus in my book.
Troy is married with five children and is a native to Idaho Falls.  He graduated from the ISU Police Academy and has served honorably in the United States Army and the Idaho National Guard.

No Left Turns on Hitt Road

The no-left-turn signs on Hitt Road between 17th and 25th may have been a pain to maneuver, but they’ve definitely saved a lot of hurt and agony.  From the chart above, there are two compelling observations.

1.      The number of crashes were cut by more than half

2.      Even more compelling - the number of injuries were seven times lower.

On the downside, it has been a real inconvenience to shoppers – especially on the Ammon side.  The longer term solution is to rework the roadway with raised dividers and lanes for U-Turns, but that will take some financial cooperation between the two cities.  Hopefully, Ammon and Idaho Falls will be able to work through the details.

In the meantime, I’d just as soon take the inconvenience over losing a leg in a car accident.

They're Watching You

Friday, a burglar was caught.  Pretty routine.  We catch a lot of burglars, but in this case, the perp was caught on surveillance video - still fairly common.  But what makes this a little different is that the video was inside a modest apartment and he stole – you guessed it – the camera.

News flash: Stealing the camera without everything downstream is like yanking the power cord on your computer right after you send that scathing email to your boss.  The damage is done and no amount of button pushing will bring it back.  Unfortunately for the bad guys, the stealing-everything-downstream part is getting tougher as video surveillance in increasingly streamed and stored off-site.
But all this can get pricy, right?  Not so much.  With the advent of low-cost webcams, broadband, and storage, it’s fairly inexpensive.

Door-to Door Ordinance Passes

The City Council passed the Door-to-Door Ordinance last night on a 5-1 vote.  It will take a month or so to get everything operational, but beginning this spring, door-to-door sales people must have a city-issued photo identification badge.  If they don’t, give us a call.

Here are some of the highlights of the new ordinance:
1.      They still can’t knock on your door if you have a “No Solicitors Allowed” sign.

2.      9 a.m. to 8 p.m. no Sundays or legal holidays

3.      Exempts: charitable organizations, school sanctioned fund raisers, religious proselytizing, and political campaigning.

4.      $40 permit fee covers most of the cost which includes fingerprints with an electronic background check.  Denials for prior criminal activity include all felons, sex offenders, violent crimes, and recent drugs convictions.

Chiefing Causes Brain Damage?

Blackfoot Police Chief Dave Moore has thrown his hat in the ring for House District Seat A.  Has senility finally set in?
No, I think not.  Dave is the type of guy that likes to make a difference and has a lengthy history of service.  He is a man of honor who is well versed in government and I have no doubt that he would do a fine job.
