They're Watching You

Friday, a burglar was caught.  Pretty routine.  We catch a lot of burglars, but in this case, the perp was caught on surveillance video - still fairly common.  But what makes this a little different is that the video was inside a modest apartment and he stole – you guessed it – the camera.

News flash: Stealing the camera without everything downstream is like yanking the power cord on your computer right after you send that scathing email to your boss.  The damage is done and no amount of button pushing will bring it back.  Unfortunately for the bad guys, the stealing-everything-downstream part is getting tougher as video surveillance in increasingly streamed and stored off-site.
But all this can get pricy, right?  Not so much.  With the advent of low-cost webcams, broadband, and storage, it’s fairly inexpensive.
